Concerts 2018

2018 is an important year for Woodbridge Chamber Concerts
It will be :

  • The tenth anniversary of founding of Woodbridge Chamber Concerts
  • The sixtieth anniversary of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams
  • The centenary of the ending of World War One

To celebrate the occasion the concert details are set out below.

Saturday 5th May 2018
A song recital given by the renowned baritone Roderick Williams accompanied by Iain Burnside, who is a patron of these concerts.They will perform Butterworth's 'A Shropshire Lad' together with works by other First World War composers, including Ivor Gurney. Ernest Farrar and W Denis Browne.

The second half of the concert will be a performance of 'Songs of Travel' by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who also served  as a medical orderly at the Somme in WW1 and was a great friend of George Butterworth.

A concert to be given by the Royal College of Music Strings. The first half will include works from the classical era by Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart. The second part of the concert features music by later composers looking back to this age; with the 'Concerto Grosso' by Vaughan Williams and Tchaikovsky's homage to Mozart, his 'Serenade for Strings'

Advanced string players from Farlingaye High School join the RCM Strings in the 'Concerto Grosso'. Performing with them in a public concert is a very valuable experience..

 

Somi Foyle Lang

Saturday 26th May 2018  
This concert might well be titled 'Framed by War'  and sees the return of the violinist Michael Foyle and his accompanist Somi Kim, who made such an impression in the opening concert of 2017. They will be joined by the French cellist Raphael Lang, to perform the works that Ravel and Vaughan Williams composed before enlisting and ending with Shostakovich’s piano trio written in Leningrad in the midst of the Second World War.
